The high, remote Lungmar – red valley – in Ladakh is staggeringly beautiful and home to a sizeable snow leopard population. Stay in a comfortable camp and join forces with an expert team of trackers and naturalists in the search for this elusive ‘ghost of the Himalaya’.
Before travelling out to the Lungmar, spend 2 nights in Leh acclimatising to the high altitude. Take things slow and steady in Leh but don’t miss a visit to the stunning monastery. Fully adjusted to the high altitude, drive into the Lungmar, meaning red valley in Ladakhi, and settle into the camp there. Warm, beautifully furnished, and with extremely comfortable beds, the Lungmar Remote Camp sets the bar for snow leopard lodgings. Track the elusive snow leopard with a team of expert trackers who will rise before dawn and head out into the valley with their binoculars and scopes to look for activity. Enjoy a hearty breakfast before jumping into the jeep to join them. Head directly to the location if anything of interest has been spotted, otherwise spread out and join the search at various sites. Groups will typically be 6-8 guests per tracker, keeping things small and intimate. Travel is by 4WD but, depending on the location of a sighting or where the trackers have chosen to set up, you could track on foot too. Apart from snow leopard tracking, explore local villages and homes, meet the wonderful local people, and learn more about life in this remote, spectacular, but very tough environment.
