For wildlife enthusiasts who want to add time relaxing at the beach, this itinerary takes in two of central India’s best national parks and ends with time relaxing at a boutique beach hotel in Goa. Kanha and Pench are full of wildlife, with regular tiger sightings reported, as well as wild dogs, leopards, sloth bears and much more. Goa needs little introduction and remains India’s go-to beach destination.
Your trip begins and ends in Mumbai, at the excellent Leela Palace hotel, which is conveniently located near the airport. The adventure starts proper once you are met at Jabalpur airport and start making your way to Kanha National Park. Kanha is arguably the most beautiful park in central India, with sal and bamboo forest, grassy meadows, and several game-rich water holes. Tiger sightings are prolific at Kanha but the park is also home to a large population of dhole (Indian wild dogs), as well as leopards, sloth bears, jackals, jungle cats, and a huge number of bird species including the magnificently coloured Indian Roller. Kanha Earth Lodge, your base, is superb.
Next you will visit Pench National Park, the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. The dense, mysterious forests here are home again to tigers, who are frequently seen, as well as leopard, dhole, sloth bears, jackals, mongoose, gaur, sambar deer, and chital (spotted deer). Birdwatching is prolific. You will stay at Pench Tree Lodge, where the naturalists are magnificent. Their recently added hide overlooks a salt lick and is a great spot for birding. Armed with some fantastic wildlife sightings you leave the parks of central India behind you and fly south to Goa where a few days of out and out relaxation await at Ahilya by the Sea. The nearby soft sand beaches are the perfect antidote to those early morning alarms whilst on safari. Sit back, relax and unwind. Feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, fly back up to Mumbai and onwards home.
