This self-drive itinerary of Namibia's northern regions encompasses wildlife, culture and scenery in equal measure.
After a night in Windhoek recovering from your flight you will be refreshed and ready for the drive to Omaruru, a small town dominated by the volcanic Erongo mountain range. As well as being a stopover enroute to Damaraland, the surrounding region hosts impressive geology, fauna and flora as well as ancient rock painting sites, all of which can be explored on guided excursions.
Situated on the eastern side of the Skeleton Coast and southwest of Etosha National Park, your next stop is the breath taking mountainous region of Damaraland. A spectacular semi-desert wilderness Damaraland is home to Namibia's famous desert-adapted elephants, black rhino as well as a few small indigenous communities who benefit from the visitors to the area. One of the area's most famous attractions is Namibia's highest mountain, Brandberg, also home to thousands of ancient rock paintings including the famous White Lady painting. Exceptional Bushmen engravings can also be seen at the rocky outcrops of Twyfelfontein. Not-to-be-missed is the Petrified Forest, a haunting landscape of gigantic fossilised trees, dating back millions of years.
The next stop is Namibia's premier wildlife sanctuary, Etosha National Park, home to a vast array of animals including the Big 5. The park has one of the largest, and perhaps the most stable, population of black rhino in the world. Its famous waterholes attract a variety of wildlife making them a veritable feast for safari goers. Spend your mornings and afternoons/evenings on game drives and the rest of the day relaxing by the pool or snoozing under the shade of a tree. This itinerary maximises your chances of experiencing all that Etosha has to offer by splitting your time between the contrasting landscapes of the park's east and south.
En route back to Windhoek your will stop in the central highlands, an area of rolling hills, valleys and an array of farms. Spend your last night stargazing in this beautiful country and enjoying the some of the clearest skies in the world.
