Found in the south west of Malawi, Majete Wildlife Reserve is the country's only Big 5 game reserve. Part of Africa's Great Rift Valley, the reserve is set in the lower Shire valley and stands as a superb example of successful conservation. The park is scenic, with pretty river valleys meeting miombo woodlands, lush forest and granite topped hills. The Shire River, with its gushing rapids, flows along the park's eastern border towards the Zambezi river, and brings the chance to see many hippo and crocodile pods along its fast-flowing course.
Birdlife in the park is excellent, with rarer species such as Pel's fishing owl joined by pale-billed hornbills and a strong population of bateleur eagles. Plains game is plentiful and on a game drive you are likely to spot a diversity of species, including zebra, sable antelope, bushbuck, kudu, nyala and eland.
The 70,000 hectare park is largely hidden from the tourist track, perfect for those seeking a quieter safari experience away from the crowds.
