Guided walking tour to discover the authentic flavours of this south east coastal village. Dating back to early Dutch and French periods, Mahebourg has preserved much of its charm including traditional homes and local restaurants serving typical Mauritian cuisine. Discovery by Bicycle

Many of our bicycle tours are tours with a difference! Most use Electro-Bikes - electric power-assisted bicycles - giving you the advantage of a bit of 'assistance' as you cycle along! This leaves you free to enjoy a little more of the wonderful scenery and local village life. Qualified guides, escorted by a safety vehicle for the entire trip, provide factual information throughout the ride at strategic sites; entry to some attractions is also included. Tours vary in length with some including lunch - see specific rides below.

Key Facts for all Electro-Bike tours: All rides include fresh lemon juice, a snack, as well as water. Maximum group size is 12 people. All participants must have a good bike riding ability and children must be at least 1.47m in height. Helmets are provided. Riders should wear sports shoes and sunglasses and bring sunscreen.

Grand Port (South east coast)

Cycle along winding lanes and through small villages, discovering the last historic vestiges of Dutch, French & British colonisation. The journey begins with coffee or juice at the Jardin de Beau Vallon colonial house before heading to the Dutch-built 'Hendrick Fort', the first stone building in the Indian Ocean. After this, there's a visit to one of the last marine carpenters in Mauritius and a chance to savour refreshing tamarind juice made by his wife, before heading through the undulating Vallee de Ferney, a magnificent wildlife reserve. Lunch is at the Falaise Rouge restaurant to sample a delicious local menu while enjoying panoramic views from its cliff-top setting. It's then on to the authentic village of Mahebourg, before ending the ride with a visit to National Historic Naval Museum.

Chamarel Full Day (Southern mountains)

A truly pleasurable ride that begins with a locally-made coffee at Le Chamarel restaurant before heading to one of the most beautiful rum distilleries on the island; after learning how rum is made, there's time for a few samples (in moderation of course!) as well as a special pineapple tasting session. It's then on through the pretty village of Chamarel and coffee plantations before visiting the Seven Coloured Earths. After the Fantasy Mountain downhill (250 metres), lunch is at a typical local restaurant beside the turquoise lagoon in Baie du Cap village. The final visit is to the elegant 19th Century colonial manor of Chateau de Bel Ombre.

Chamarel Half Day (Southern mountains)

A shorter ride than the full day version above, but still taking in authentic villages and historic traces of the island's colonial past, as well as meeting some local inhabitants. A visit to the famous Seven Coloured Earths & waterfall is also included. After riding down the 250 metre Fantasy Mountain there's a short refreshment stop in Baie du Cap before heading along the coast to the Bel Ombre Sugar Estate where the ride finishes.

Pamplemousses (North)

A full-day tour that is in part a tribute to the island's sugar cane industry and colonial past. Winding through fields of sugar cane, there are stops enroute at Le Mauricia colonial house & gardens and along the coast for a magnificent view of the northern islands. A picnic lunch is taken in the grounds of Villebague colonial house and then it's on to the village of Petite Rosalie for fresh pineapple! There's also time for tea and fresh local pastries at Chez Sujita, run by local family. A guided tour of the famous Pamplemousses botanical gardens lets you learn more of the island's history as well as its giant water lilies and other rare plants. The ride finishes where it started, at the L'Aventure du Sucre for a visit to its fascinating museum.

Souillac (South coast)

Starting at Bel Ombre, ride through the villages of La Baie de Jakotet and Riviere des Galets before reaching the small town of Souillac with its many colonial buildings. Onward to the Gris-Gris cliffs for a spectacular view before visiting La Roche Qui Pleure (the weeping rock). On the return journey, you'll sample a delicious local meal courtesy of the dynamic Mrs Mala - an unforgettable moment of Mauritian hospitality!

Le Morne Brabant (South west coast)

A fabulous half-day ride bringing together traditional coastal villages, colourful local people and vibrant colours of the wonderful lagoon around Le Morne. Beginning at Le Place du Moulin in Bel Ombre, you'll visit Baie du Cap, an authentic fishing village, and then La Prairie - once an important area for the slave route, before reaching the picturesque fishing village of Le Morne. You then retrace your route back to the start.

Fat Bike non-electric excursion (Wolmar, west coast)

Enjoy a Fat Bike experience on an exclusive ride through the estate of Wolmar near Flic en Flac. Choose either half day excursions without lunch, or a 5-hour tour with lunch. The perfect activity for nature lovers as well as those looking for a bit of soft adventure, you're sure to have a fun-filled time on an altogether different bike! If you are lucky enough, you may see wild boar, deer and geese to name but a few. If you take the excursion with lunch, you're in for a treat with delicious local specialities such as deer curry, chicken curry, lentils and tasty chutneys as well as local ice cream. Lakaz Chamarel Exclusive Lodge is a delightful, privately-owned boutique property immersed in nature in the southern mountains near Chamarel. It offers a variety of accommodation, but we thoroughly recommend the Garden Pool Suites and some fabulous Seaview Suites. It also has a small spa. Delicious, locally-inspired cuisine is provided at the property's restaurant set within the tropical gardens; breakfast is a real highlight. Various walks can be taken direct from the property.

Mauritius by Sea - private overnight catamaran cruise

This private 2 day/1 night sailing cruise provides an altogether different experience for your Mauritius holiday. The crew take care of everything, including meals, leaving you to relax with the sights and sounds of the ocean - watch the colours in the sky change at sunset; stare up at starry night sky as you lie on the yacht's trampoline; take a morning swim in a crystal clear lagoon as the crew prepare your breakfast.

Here's a sample itinerary. Early morning embarkation at Grand Baie and sail to the northern isles. The 2 protected sanctuaries of Flat island and Gabriel island offer great opportunities for snorkelling, kayaking and bird watching. After lunch, prepared by the crew, sail the west coast to Tamarin Bay. Dinner and night aboard in the lagoon. Wake to the early morning chance of swimming with dolphins in Tamarin Bay. After breakfast, sail past the dramatic Le Morne Brabant to Ile aux Benitiers where you have free time to explore the island or swim in its crystal clear waters while the crew make lunch. After sailing back along the coast, through the Turtle Bay Marine Park, disembarkation at Grand Baie is at approx. 17.00 hours.
