Ammaarah Kalam

Ammaarah was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and has lived there for most of her life. As a child she spent a few years living in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. She attributes her passion for travel to this time in her life as most of it was spent travelling between South Africa and the United Arab Emirates, often stopping off at various locations along the way.

After completing her undergraduate degree in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Cape Town, Ammaarah went on to work at a content creation agency which focused on filming sustainability initiatives in Africa and Asia. She then decided to return to university to complete her postgraduate degree in Business Communications and Marketing.

She spent the next 5 years at an online education business developing her expertise in various areas of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) such as Off-Page SEO, On-Page SEO, Technical SEO and E-Commerce SEO. Prior to joining Mahlatini, she was responsible for leading high revenue driving projects that focused on increasing high-quality lead conversions across a large number of partner websites.

Most Memorable Trip

It has to be my trip to the Kruger National Park, we were extremely lucky to see a large variety of animals, including the Big 5. The highlight of this trip was definitely the multiple leopard sightings we had. On our first day we were welcomed by a very large leopard lounging in a nearby tree with a recent kill, and throughout our trip we continued to have multiple leopard sightings. As a final send-off, as we were exiting the Kruger, we stumbled across a leopard relaxing underneath a bush right next to the road.

Top Of My Bucket-List

I have always had a passion for learning about history and different cultures so Botswana has always been on top of my bucket list. It is such a culturally rich country that has so many unique, once-in-a-lifetime experiences to offer.

Top Travel Tip

Always pack some snacks in your checked luggage! This is especially helpful if you arrive at your destination late at night or early morning when local restaurants might not be open or for those days where you don’t feel like going out to purchase food. You’ll be amazed how much biscuits and crackers can come in handy!
