Bjorn Van HuyssteenTravel Expert

Born in Cape Town and raised in the heart of the Cape Winelands, Bjorn's home will always be on the Western Cape, no matter where his travels take him. Equally, he is firmly wedded to a career in the travel industry, which he embarked on over 20 years ago, following his studies in Tourism.

In his first role with Trans Africa Safaris, Bjorn progressed through the ranks over his 17 years with the company to become a Senior Consultant. Moving to a management position with iKapa Tours, he was responsible for key territories - North America, Europe and Australia.

Bjorn's move to Mahlatini was sparked by a meeting of minds and a real connection with the co-founders' genuine passion for Africa and the luxury safari industry. As a relatively new member of the tribe, Bjorn is excited to share that passion with Mahlatini's clients in the UK and across other key global markets.

Most Memorable Travel Experience

I will never forget a beautiful experience I shared with an elephant at Royal Malewane Private Game Reserve. I was lazing on my viewing deck after a morning game drive and out of nowhere, a huge elephant comes strolling up and puts his truck in my private plunge pool. After drinking his fill from the pool, splashing some of the water on his back to cool off, he nonchalantly turned on his heel, without even glancing at me, and casually made his way back to his herd in the Kruger bushveld. A precious memory!

Travel Wish-List

Most definitely a stay in the Okavango Delta, followed by a visit to the mighty Victoria Falls.

Favourite Property

So many and for so many different reasons but I must mention my Cape Town favourites - The Silo, Ellerman House and the classic Cape Grace Hotel. Their stunning mountain views are just the icing on the cake of luxury hotels that have got all the elements just right!

Favourite safari animal

Rhino - I find watching them so therapeutic. Herbivores with no natural predators means they are pretty chilled and spend their days just minding their own business.

Best #MahlatiniMoment

As one of the newer members of the Mahlatini team, I'm sure the best is yet to come; but a shared passion for Africa and safari across the team was why I joined, it was evident on day one and makes every day in the office a genuine pleasure.
