Lance Botha

Having spent most of his teenage years travelling with family on safaris holidays and studying tourism in high school, Lance knew the travel industry was a natural fit. After graduating with a national diploma in tourism, he began his career working for a South African based tour operator. Discovering his growing passion for luxury, conservation-based safaris led him to Mahlatini. Lance thrives on being able to continually grow and develop alongside the African travel industry and takes the opportunity to explore whenever he can.

Most Memorable Trip

My most memorable travel experience has to be a Big 5 safari in the Kruger National Park. The animal sightings were absolutely phenomenal and I surprised myself by really enjoying birdwatching too.

Top Of My Bucket-List

It has to be gorilla trekking in Rwanda or Uganda. Up there as one of the most iconic African experiences, and with limited visitors each year, witnessing a mighty silverback in his natural habitat is at the top of my bucket-list for sure!

Favourite Safari Animal

"Of course, the gorilla. These animals are gentle and exhibit a variety of human-like traits including laughter and sadness. One point that stands out for me is their adventurous nature, like when they dart around trees, hang from branches and vines, or roll down slopes."

Sundowner Of Choice

"An ice-cold Devil's Peak Lager. This smooth, easy-drinking beer is so refreshing and I love that it's locally made. The name was inspired by the mountainous backdrop of Cape Town which consists of the spire of Devil's Peak alongside the flat top of Table Mountain."

Top Travel Tip

Always be well rested and ensure that packing for a trip is done in advance - at least one full day before. I usually make a packing checklist so that nothing is left behind. Being organised and planning ahead of time will make your journey stress-free and seamless.

The Best Part Of My Job

I love working as part of such a great team. Everyone has a positive attitude and I am constantly learning from those around me as we share advice, knowledge and expertise. There are many opportunities at Mahlatini to get involved in conservation and community upliftment initiatives. I enjoyed taking part in a volunteer day at Uthando, an award-winning non-profit organization that creates a link between tourism and community development projects.
