The capital of Mozambique, Maputo is also the country's largest zone of urban bustle. A pleasant port city, streets are lined with jacaranda and flame trees and seaside feel of the harbour is quite appealing. The vast majority of Maputo's buildings possess a nice aesthetic, complemented by the city's lively Mozambican character. Taking in the city sights is best done on foot, with pleasant colonial buildings, street-side cafes and plenty of markets to explore. However, if you enjoy electric nightlife then Maputo can deliver with various bars and restaurants to enjoy. Cuisine is particularly good in the city and recommended for anyone with a passion for seafood.
Within the city limits hotels are excellent and the perfect window to inner city life. If you'd prefer to stay outside the city then there are superb accommodation options nearby, with the likes of Machangulo Beach Lodge and White Pearl Resorts well-appointed choices. The surrounds also offer further attractions to those the city can offer. The beautiful Machangulo peninsula is most noteworthy among them - covering 20km of glorious beach, stunning bush land and twelve large lakes. Experience thrilling water sports, spot whales from the shore and embark on game drives.
North of Machangulo, a visit to the Maputo Elephant Reserve is not to be missed. Encompassing 50,000 hectares of wilderness, drink-in the reserve's spectacular scenery and wildlife. Make your way through woodland, floodplains, beaches and swamps to spy the estimated 200 elephant that call the reserve home along with hippo, vervet monkey, crocodile and reedbuck.
