Honeymoon to Tanzania

Andy & Lisa Brownlie, 13th June 2012
Overall Rating:

The highlights never stopped - watching baby turtles hatch on the beach on our first day at Ras Kutani, champagne candle-light dinner on the beach on our first night. Watching a family of 4 elephants walk right past our tent or lions sitting 2 metres away from our 4x4 on safari in Selous. Diving with 1000s of fish off Mnemba Atoll or drinking cocktails in our rooftop plunge pool at Matemwe Retreat. 15 days of pure bliss.

Accommodation Visited

“The place was perfect for us as we wanted 3 days of chill out to start the honeymoon and thats exactly what we got. Cottage was great, huge bed, very natural feel to the place - perfect for relaxing. Food was really good and loads of it. Staff were exceptional all of them took time to speak to you and get to know you. Turtles were being hatched first afternoon we were there - amazing sight. We had dinner on the beach and a dinner on the pontoon over the lagoon beautiful.

Only downside - couple of their cocktails not quite up to scratch and the snorkelling off the reef/beach was dire - vis was less than 2 feet! Good bodyboarding though.”

“Impala was great, food excellent. Tent was good without the natural luxury feeling that Ras Kutani had. We had a good guide, Dennis and despite being only start of dry season we managed to see loads of elephants, endless giraffe and impala, lions (twice) hyennas with cubs, hundreds of zebra, wildebeast, buffalo, crocs, hippos. Being able to mix up the drives with walks and boats was great. Even watched 4 elephants on foot from about 5m for 15 mins with just myself and Andreas the camp manager.”

“Awesome - the cottage we had at the retreat was amazing so much room, great design. Loved our plunge pool. Took a bit of getting used to having a butler but now I don't know how I'll live without one. He took so much time to make sure we were perfectly happy it was great. So romantic and so relaxing. Diving was excellent as were massages. Main resort was also great, lovely gardens. The whole place just has this magical feel.......and the days belnd into one and you just loose yourself. Perfect for honeymoon.

Food was sometimes excellent sometimes only good. They had a tendancy to really over cook the grilled fish which was a shame because that's what we love to eat when we stay by the sea. We did get to eat loads of lobster though so easily made up for it. Cocktails were not included in the all inclusive package which I thought was a bit tight.”

“Hmmm - hard to decide about this place, nice staff but a noticable change after leaving Matemwe. The faded grandeur style is now rather too faded. We were in Keep Suite and I doubt I'll ever stay in a room again that has two swings and a roof top tower tea room or one where you walk in the front door and almost straight into the bath! Roof top restaurant is great for getting a feel for Stone Town but food was so so.”

Staff Review

“Service from Jamie and the rest was first class - all questions/issues solved as quickly as possible. Jamie had lots of first hand knowledge and advice to offer and it was delivered with a laid back and friendly attitude that made everyone at Mahlatini a pleasure to deal with.”
