Our highlights included: The west coast catamaran trip to go dolphin watching. We saw a whole pod of dolphins, no more than 10ft from the boat. It was amazing. The crew of the boat (Dolphin Discovery) were also excellent. The hotel. From the moment we arrived (to the sound of tribal drums being beaten) the staff could not do enough for you. The room was fantastic and the choice of food & drink was massive and all of it was delicious. One quick point - my wife and I decided quite early on that we would do as much (in terms of excursions) or as little as we wanted - if we were enjoying just sitting on the beach then that's what we would do. Our Mauritours rep in the hotel was so unlike other reps and didn't try the hard sell at all when we booked our one excursion. He just said to give him a call if we wanted to do any more and he would come and see us and take our booking. Such a refreshing change.
I don't really feel able to say too much about the island as we hardly left the hotel but the people we did meet were so nice. There are some spectacular views on offer as well, with the sugar cane fields contrasting with the ocean.
Excellent doesn't come close to describing the Heritage Awali. It's beautifully appointed in an African style and in my opinion looked warmer and more welcoming than its sister site (the Telfair) next door. Our room (a beachfront room) was spacious, well appointed and the view from the balcony was beautiful. The bar was a very nice place to spend an evening and was always lively with different live music every night. It's worth noting that the sea was very settled due to the reef offshore - no large waves to deal with if you wanted to swim in the sea, although there is a strong current at times drifting from left to right as you stand on the beach looking out to see. It's never too strong to be an issue though as it's quite shallow so you can just stand up. The local beer, Phoenix, was very nice and apparently the Pina Coladas' were too. The food was varied and consistently good in the main restaurant - I don't think I had a bad meal there at all - and the separate restaurants were all delicious. We sampled Ginga, Annabellas, Infinity Blue and the Chateau all twice and each one was amazing.

I dealt with both Nikki and Maura in planning our honeymoon and they were both extremely helpful. Nikki was "unlucky" enough to be my first contact and the manner in which she dealt with all my questions & produced the numerous different quotes for the many itineraries and hotels I looked at was both professional but also very friendly and made no query seem too small or silly.
