We booked with Mahlatini on the recommendation of a friend and are so glad we did. We dealt with Greg Fox who had endless patience with us changing our minds and was great at giving us options to suit a range of budgets.Although I had done a lot of research myself two of the places we stayed were completely off my radar and were superb. Clearly the advantage of using someone who knows their home patch. The only bit of our trip that was less than perfect was a choice made by us! We will definitely use Mahlatini again.
Initial impression was disappointment. The lodges were in need of a bit of TLC and none of the canvas sections closed properly. Not great if you are a bit uncomfortable with up close and personal encounters! The toilet was stained and several lights not working both inside and along the path to the main lodge. The plunge pool very dirty. However, we still had a great time as there was a good bunch of people there and the staff were all fantastic. Management was noticeably absent and your custom seemed taken for granted. The big five were present. Just. Bird life was abundant but as a safari it was far from perfect. This was the poorest of our choices and the only one not recommended by you!
Views Boutique Hotel and Spa 5
Wow. We should have stayed longer. We had an amazing room and the view just took your breath away. Service was brilliant as was the breakfast which was served on our balcony. We will be back on our next trip for sure. Only down was that the restaurant was closed still so had to eat in the more casual diner which was fine for one night but not great if staying longer.
Grootbos Private Nature Reserve 5
Once again stunning. Nothing was too much trouble. Our room was the furthest from the lodge and had a small pool. Very peaceful and beautifully situated. The whale watching sundowners trip was brilliant but the fynbos horseback trip was all about having a ride on a horse rather than anyone telling you about the fynbos. Food was out of his world and the wine list was good and very reasonably priced.
What can I say. Perfect. We had room 1 which had a conservatory leading to the pool. The welcome we received was warm and genuine. The place is run with a level of professionalism rarely encountered. Nothing is left to chance. We were chauffeur driven on our wine tour and to lunch at la petit ferme. The turn down service was like nothing else we have encountered. Rose petals, candles, fizz on ice and desserts on the bed. Without a doubt the best service we have ever had.
Stunning location and beautiful room. Staff efficient and friendly. Lots of nice touches. Only annoyance was that the main restaurant was closed for two nights for a private function. Not great with the babies as it meant we had to eat out early all together which was not the plan. The management were not at all apologetic and just said that there were plenty of places to eat nearby. You also struggled to get a table in the bar area during the day as they are all reserved for people coming in for drinks or afternoon tea. However we would definitely stay there again as the location, rooms and service are superb. The pool area was also perfect and very quiet as there are so many corporate guests.
