Where to go on an African safari tour

Contact a Specialist

There is no one best destination in Africa for safari, but there is a best safari destination depending on your unique wish list. Before deciding where to go on safari you need to consider when you're going, who you're going with, your budget, what activities you want to do and what animals you want to see on safari. We have outlined our top safari destinations and why our experts recommend them.

South Africa

South African safari is all about Big 5 game drives, activities for the adventurous traveller, family friendly lodges, animal conservation and world class service. South Africa is one of the most diverse countries in the world and we recommend safaris in the private game reserves like Sabi Sands and Timbavati. These private game reserves ensure the most authentic and luxurious safari experience as limited game vehicles mean uninterrupted wildlife sightings and animals continuing their natural behaviors undisturbed. A safari in South Africa can very easily be combined with a city break or a beach stay, allowing for a more diverse experience.

Recommended for Family safaris, those embarking of their first safari, malaria-free safaris, Kruger National Park, Sabi Sands and value for money safari tours.

Recommended tours Luxury Family SA Twin-Centre and Luxury Cape Town, Kruger and Seychelles Honeymoon.

Kenya

With endless savannahs teeming with game, fascinating Masai culture, the great migration, flamingo-filled lakes and pristine beaches, Kenya is the ultimate 'Out of Africa' experience. Often regarded as the birth place of safari, there are some long-standing, established lodges within Kenya that offer authentic and truly unique tours with relaxation and luxurious down time in between game drives.

Recommended for Family safaris, Masai Mara, witnessing the wildebeest migration, Amboseli National Park and honeymoon safaris.

Recommended tours Masai Mara and Kenyan Coast bush and beach and Kenya Seychelles Honeymoon twin-centre.

Botswana

Botswana is the home of exclusive safaris that don't compromise on luxury. The properties here pride themselves on world class service, luxury accommodation and unique safari experiences. Botswana is also famous for the highest concentration of game in Africa and safari guides who will get you as close as possible to the animals on walking safaris, boat safaris and game drives.

Zambia

Zambia is affectionately known as the 'real Africa'. Its remote and intimate safari camps dot the huge national parks and private game reserves, which are brimming with various wildlife species. Zambia is famous for walking safari, allowing visitors to experience the wild like never before. Namibia is all about the landscape, which our Travel Experts say is almost like another planet. Vast, remote and 360° endless horizons. If you are a keen photographer, Namibia is sure to be your new obsession, with the Skeleton Coast being one of the top photographed areas. When it comes to safari, game drives through the Etosha National Park show off one of the finest reserves on the continent. Rwanda

Rwanda is a must for primate lovers. There are 13 primate species that occur in Nyungwe Forest National Park alone, which represents 20-25% of the total number of primates in Africa. Chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, owl faced monkeys and of course the majestic endangered mountain gorilla are some of the animals which our travel experts aim to see when visiting Rwanda.

Uganda

Uganda offers two very different safari options - lush mountainous rain forests or savannah grasslands. Trekking through the dense misty, mountain forests is a unique experience as you walk with local guides to reach your goal - observing Gorillas in their natural habitat. After visiting the rain forests and our primate cousins, we recommend a classic safari experience in the likes of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Based in a Mahlatini approved camp, a safari through this 2000sq km savannah can provide sightings of some of the top safari wildlife like leopard, hippo and tree climbing lions. A true 'adventure of a life-time' awaits you in Uganda.

Malawi isn't always the first destination that springs to mind when people think of safari, but it's for this reason that we would recommend it to those who have been on a safari before. Malawi offers something different and one visit will make you see why it is called the 'Warm heart of Africa'.

Recommended for Those who have been on safari before, game drives and black rhino in Liwonde National Park, secluded honeymoons and family safaris followed by some water side fun at Lake Malawi.
