The Amakhala Game Reserve is an 18 000 acre private game park located in the malaria free Eastern Cape. It offers accommodation in a selection of 11 establishments made up of country houses, safari lodges and tented camps some of which are owner managed by the descendants of the original families who arrived here with the British settlers of 1820. The reserve is a Big 5 Reserve and hosts other animals such as cheetah, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and plenty of antelope species.
Safari Lodge is a 4 star, intimate thatched lodge in a valley of indigenous bush at the northern boundary of Amakhala Game Reserve. Its 11 unique air-conditioned safari huts offer all the comforts of a luxury lodge including private plunge pools and separate lounge area. The rooms are a favourite with honeymooners who are treated to sparkling wine on ice alongside an aromatherapy scented bubble bath. Each of the rooms has views of the waterhole where monkeys come to play and antelope and zebra quench their thirst.
Approximately 1 hour drive from Port Elizabeth and approximately a 3.5 hour drive from the Garden Route.
Morning and afternoon game drives, bird watching, game spotting walks along the Bushman's river, boat cruises and canoe safaris. Visits can also be arranged to the nearby Addo Elephant National Park and the Shamwari Born Free Foundation.
