The Marine

Perched on top of the cliffs at Hermanus, The Marine has one of the southern hemisphere's most spectacular seascapes. The hotel has commanding views that extend across Walker Bay or over the beautiful internal courtyard, finely manicured gardens and the Overberg Mountains. The Marine offers guests the unique opportunity to experience the finest land-based whale watching in the world. From June to September guests are able to view these majestic creatures from the comfort of their beautiful sea view room.

The Marine offers 43 guest rooms including standard rooms, luxury rooms, suites and premier suites. World-class cuisine is served in the award-winning Seafood at the Marine and Pavillion at the Marine. Relax over afternoon tea or cocktails in The Orangery or Reading Room. There is also an on-site spa.

Getting There

The Marine is approximately 1 hour's drive from Cape Town and the winelands and a 4 ½ hour drive from the Garden Route.


Cliff walks, whale watching from boat and the shore (in season Jun - Nov), golf, swimming in the sea (directly in front of the hotel is a tidal pool where you can swim as close to 100m away from the whales), relaxing on the beach and eating out.

The Marine is an old hotel that has been refurbished recently. Despite this, little has been done to maximise the sea-views or reduce noise of this old building. We were warmly welcomed and shown to our Luxury room with fantastic sea views out of large, floor to ceiling windows. The problem with this though is that the Cliff Walk was right outside, meaning everyone from early morning joggers, ramblers, commuters etc…
