Rising from the thirsty bushveld below, the Waterberg is an expansive plateau found in the south of Limpopo. While this wilderness area may be lesser visited it acts well as an unusual alternative to the Kruger. There is a definite remoteness here, something that counterbalances a lower density of game. Although that's not to say the wildlife in the Waterberg is lacking, quite to the contrary, you can expect to find the Big 5 along with a host of other magnificent species.
With holidays to the Waterberg a number of excellent reserves can be found, with Welgevonden Game Reserve and Marakele chief among them. The former offers a private game viewing experience across 37,000 hectares of rugged natural beauty. You'll find exclusive lodges in this reserve along with a good population of white rhino. Marakele National Park meanwhile also offers phenomenal game viewing and at its heart is the unique Kransberg; curiously shaped plateaus, peaks and cliffs that are worthy of a visit. Within Marakele you can experience a private game viewing experience with a stay at the 23000 hectare Marataba Reserve which offers countless wildlife sightings and exhilarating bush walks and game drives.
