Expect a rich mosaic of spectacular wilderness and thrilling attractions with holidays to Madikwe & the North. Spanning various different locations and landscapes a good place to start exploring is North West Province. While the province remains famous for the Sun City Resort, take the chance to stray further afield and you'll enjoy a far richer experience.
Lying directly on the Botswanan border, Madikwe Game Reserve is nestled in the far north of the province and spreads out across a dramatic 765 km² of Big 5 wilderness. The exclusive reserve is a stunning area of natural beauty characterised by flat plains of grassland and woodland. Accommodation at Madikwe is incredibly luxurious, from the unique Jaci's Tree Lodge to the aptly named Madikwe Safari Lodge; you won't tire of superbly comfortable rooms, excellent facilities and stellar service. Thanks to fantastic guiding on game drives you'll have the chance to see not only all of the Big 5 but a wide variety of species as well, including cheetah, rare African wild dog and around 350 species of bird.
To Madikwe's south east lies the famed Sun City, a curious sight of high-rise hotels and golf courses rising from the otherwise still and quiet of the bushveld. There are only four hotels found within the expansive complex, all of which possess their own appeal, however the Palace of the Lost City is unique, creating the illusion of an ancient civilisation through distinctive design. In the hinterland of the resort take on two world-class golf courses, enjoy gaming and casinos, relax at the Valley of Waves water park or embark on an adventure in neighbouring Pilanesberg Game Reserve. This malaria-free reserve is excitingly set in the crater of an extinct volcano, and not only offers Big 5 game viewing but some interesting rock formations as well.
Travelling beyond the North West you'll drift into South Africa's northernmost province, Limpopo. Named after the Limpopo River, the province is celebrated for its untamed landscapes and off-the-beaten-track allure. Set a course for the uppermost tip of Limpopo to find the Mapungubwe National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of ancient land, laced in history and dating back as far as 1200AD. One of South Africa's most significant archaeological sites, the national park was once home to a thriving civilisation. History aside, game viewing in the park is excellent with elephant, lion, leopard and hyena sightings.
In the south of Limpopo lies the Waterberg region, an expansive plateau ascending from the thirsty bushveld below. An intriguing alternative to game viewing in the Kruger, this malaria-free area offers a lesser visited wilderness to enjoy, although at the cost of a lower density of game. The Big 5 are present however, along with a host of other species. Visiting the stunning Welgevonden Game Reserve is an excellent choice: spanning 37,500 hectares, the reserve houses rugged natural beauty, exclusive safari lodges and a superb population of white rhino.
Explore 75,000 hectares of Big 5 wilderness, traverse a variety of habitat on exciting activities and see rare wild dog.
A complex of hotels, gambling, golf and game viewing - an urban oasis found in the quiet of the bushveld.
A vast plateau of remote wilderness, home to the Big 5 and a number of superb game reserves to explore.
