Balanced on the edge of the Haputale Escarpment and lying in a beautiful tea estate founded 145 years ago, Thotalagala is a restored tea planter’s bungalow with 7 suites. With a feeling of staying in someone’s home, it is also a step back to the turn of the century. Tour the 1890 gem of a tea factory, hike up to the panoramic Lipton’s Seat and take tea in the garden of Sir Thomas Lipton’s own, unchanged bungalow.
Thotalagala is surrounded by 20 acres of lawn with sweeping views across the Haputale hills and 4000 acres of tea. The 7 luxurious suites are divided between the original house and the seamless new wing. They are spacious with polished wood floors, period and reproduction furniture and 4-poster beds. Dinner at Thotalagala is served in the dining room at the 20-seater communal table, although you can eat separately should you wish. There is no set menu, simply proposed dishes which your butler will discuss with you. There are two sitting rooms but much of the life happens outside on the terrace, making the most of the spectacular view. There is also an infinity pool for a refreshing dip after a visit to the tea plantation.
