Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge

The Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge is a very large hotel perched on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. If you can forgive the dated decor and 'chain hotel' feel you will be rewarded with the most magnificent views over the crater floor. Its position on the eastern rim allows the most spectacular and uninterrupted views of the sunset.

Another advantage is that the lodge is close to the quieter eastern road into the Crater which is used for both decents and ascents. This road sees less traffic than the road on the western side of the Crater and it also means that you start your game drive on the opposite side of the floor of the Crater to most people. If you depart early on a drive you will likely have a few hours there with relatively few other vehicles around which is a major advantage in the busier seasons.

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge offers 96 bedrooms. Rooms are spacious with ensuite bathroom, private lounge and balcony. Each double room boasts two queen-size beds. Dining takes place at the Lemala Hill restaurant which offers continental and local cuisine to cater for all palates. Other hotel facilities include a large reception, swimming pool, bar and lounge.

Getting There

The lodge is located 170 km from Arusha, approximately 4 hour's drive and 40 minutes by air, with another 45 minutes transfer from the airstrip to the lodge.

Game drives into the Crater, bush breakfasts and lunches, barbeques, sundowners and visits to Empaki Crater.

Review of Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge

Brian and Ruth Cave

Location is magnificent and rooms are lovely. Our room was a long way from reception up a fairly steep hill, however this was not a big problem for a short stay. Meal times are very busy, but queues were still short and well managed.
