Pongwe Beach Hotel

Explore Tanzania

Pongwe, about halfway up Zanzibar's east coast, has a real gem of a beach - true Indian Ocean style - making Pongwe Beach Hotel an authentic paradise retreat. The bay's clear blue waters, protected by the reef one kilometre from the shore, are ideal for swimming and snorkelling.

An unassuming and mellow hotel, it concentrates on simplicity with style. Food is one of the highlights at Pongwe. Consultant chef Adrian trained to gourmet standards in Europe, and meals are served in a big palm-thatched building overlooking the beach,

There are only 16 cottages, lending the hotel a wonderfully intimate air. Zanzibari in structure, with palm-leaf thatched roofs, mosaic floors and handmade wooden furniture, they're set right on the beach front or 20m back amongst the beautiful green gardens. An absence of TVs or radios means the whole place is blissfully quiet.

This hotel is in a idyllic setting. Staff again were friendly and helpful. The food varied from being very good to average on occasion.

earlier comments are relevant. camp is very quite and remote. accommodation is superb - only problem is bat droppings in the vicinity of some accommodation. transport to and from for optional activities is really expensive.

Pongwe is in an idyllic location. It has a wonderful laid back feeling which really helps you to relax after the rigours of the safari. The staff are all very helpful and so cheerful, and full of smiles. The cottage was great facing the beach with lovely peaceful places to sit and read and relax. Food was lovely with a varied menu every day. It would have been helpful to have a wider snack menu for lunch as we didn't want a set meal but had soon exhausted the range of snacks on offer. With such a wonderful hotel it seems slightly churlish to complain about anything, however, I did feel that they do need to pay a little more attention to detail in the small things that are to be expected in a hotel of this standard and cost e.g. plug for the sink, shower cap, pen, mugs that aren't chipped or cracked. Checking out was protracted as the bill had to be added up 4 times and then later I realised that we were charged $50 for our transfer to Stone Town which had already been paid. If you can get that refunded I would much appreciate it.
