While Dar es Salaam is not Tanzania's capital city, the sprawling metropolis is the country's central hub, holding many of Tanzania's metropolitan attractions. The city streets are lined with shops and restaurants and the seaport offers fantastic views over the Indian Ocean. Dar es Salaam is often used as a stopover destination, with Dar es Salaam International Airport the gateway to numerous destinations around the country as well as the stunning beaches of Zanzibar Island.
As Tanzania's largest city, holidays to Dar es Salaam hold a number of attractions, with the National Museum and House of Culture a great starting point for getting to know the city, and indeed the country, a little better. Pace through Tanzanian history and discover the colourful mixture of influences, including Indian, Arabian and African that have culminated in the city's unique culture and heritage. A number of exhibitions are on offer at the museum, chief among them being 'Zinj': the skull of an early human ancestor.
Uninhabited desert islands off the coast of the city comprise the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve System. Encompassing Bongoyo Island, Mbudya Island, Pangavini and Fungu Yasini, you can visit these island escapes and at certain times of the year spot humpback whales.
For an authentic taste of Dar es Salaam some of the local market places are a way of picking up the city vibe. However, luxury is never far away with a number of plush hotels on offer around the city centre.
