East Africa's Best Beach Vacation Add-Ons After a Great Migration Safari

After a busy safari following the Great Migration, a few slow days on the coast is the most blissful way to bring an end to an iconic trip.

A beach add-on is the part of the vacation that lets everything you've just seen settle before you jump back into real life. The real question is which coast to choose, and that depends on where your migration safari took you and how much time you have.

Why Combine a Safari with a Beach Escape

The Great Migration moves in a rough loop between the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara, which means your safari route already points you toward one of two coastlines. If you’re visiting Tanzania's Serengeti or Ngorongoro, then Zanzibar sits a short flight away, and this is where the majority of our clients go after their safari. If you’re coming from Kenya's Maasai Mara or Laikipia, then the Kenyan coast, Diani, Watamu, and Lamu are all alternative possibilities for you next stop, often reachable without so much as a night in Nairobi.

Although the Great Migration is a year-round event, with the herds moving in a continual loop between Tanzania and Kenya, the river crossings that draw most travelers to the migration run from around July to October. This overlaps with the dry season on both coastlines, meaning calmer seas with better diving visibility and sunshine will be waiting for you at the other end. If your interest is the calving season instead, typically January to February in the southern Serengeti, Zanzibar's own dry, sunny stretch from December through March is also lovely.

Zanzibar After the Great Migration in Tanzania

For anyone tracking the migration through the Serengeti, Zanzibar remains the obvious choice, and for good reason. Flights connect directly from a few of the Serengeti's airstrips, such as Seronera (Central Serengeti) and Kogatende (Northern Serengeti), so there's no backtracking through Arusha, and you can be on the sand within a couple of hours of your last game drive.

The east coast (Bwejuu, Paje, and Michamvi) tends to appeal to couples and honeymooners who are looking for quiet, reef-fringed beaches, while the north (Nungwi and Kendwa) is slightly less tidal, making it ideal for families.

We've found Zawadi Hotel, perched above its own cove on the south-east coast, to be one of the island's most complete post-safari retreats. Each villa has a private pool and a terrace that looks straight out over the Indian Ocean.

Breezes Beach Club & Spa, a little south of Zawadi, suits families and couples wanting a slightly livelier resort feel, with its own dive center and one of the island's better-regarded spas.

For those drawn to the north's sunset scene and its lively beach bars, Zuri Zanzibar at Kendwa offers private bungalows and villas with direct beach access.

Spending time lounging in the sun is a highlight not to be missed, but for those looking to do more, Zanzibar earns its reputation as more than a beach bolt-on.

Stone Town's alleyways and spice gardens are not to be missed. We also highly recommend visiting Mnemba Atoll, just off the north-east coast, as it is one of the better spots in the Indian Ocean for snorkeling with dolphins.

Divers with a little more time might also consider Pemba, Zanzibar's quieter northern neighbor, known for its steep coral walls and considerably fewer visitors.

The Kenya Coast After Exploring the Mara

If your migration safari took you through the Maasai Mara, the Kenyan coast makes a lot of sense as your next stop, because there’s no second country, no second visa, and no extra vaccination requirements. If you’re headed to Diani, a single light aircraft hop from the Mara—usually routed through Mombasa—puts you on the coast the same day. If you’re going north to Watamu or Lamu, you’d likely take a connecting flight through Nairobi and on to your next stop.

Diani, south of Mombasa, is the most straightforward choice, and the beach itself is part of the appeal: a long, reef-protected stretch of pale sand where the water stays calm and shallow even at high tide, ideal for anyone wanting to swim rather than watch from a sun lounger.

Further north, Watamu offers a different pace again, centered on its marine national park and excellent big-game fishing.

For those with an extra day or two, Lamu, further north still, swaps resort polish for genuine Swahili heritage: a UNESCO-listed old town, donkey-only streets and a slower, more contemplative kind of coast.

Watamu's marine national park is the natural focus for snorkeling and diving, while big-game fishing draws visitors further offshore.

At Manda Bay, guests can go fishing or snorkeling, take cultural visits to the ruins of a Swahili settlement, go bird watching, or sail on traditional dhows.

Beach Escapes Further Afield: Seychelles, Mauritius and Mozambique

Some travelers prefer their beach stay to feel like a separate vacation. If that's you, the Seychelles and Mauritius are both well suited to following a Kenya-based migration safari, connecting via Nairobi without excessive routing.

Mozambique also works well from a southern circuit safari. None of these islands are quicker to reach than Zanzibar or the Kenya coast, but the extra travel time can be worth it for a honeymoon or a longer trip where the beach stay is as much the point as the safari itself.

Choosing the Right Beach Add-On for Your Vacation

The best beach add-on is really a question of matching logistics to what you want from the second half of your trip. A short, easy hop favors Diani or Zanzibar. A wish for deeper seclusion points toward Pemba, Lamu or the Seychelles. Family groups tend to do best at resort-style properties like Breezes, Alfajiri—given its villa concept from 2-4 bedrooms—or Zuri, where there's space for everyone; couples and honeymooners are usually happiest somewhere smaller and quieter, such as Zawadi or Alfajiri. Although Zuri is also very popular amongst couples and honeymooners too.
