One of the most common questions we get from parents is how long a family safari should actually be. The short answer is that for most families, 8 to 10 nights works best. That gives you enough time for proper game viewing, some downtime, and one or two carefully chosen safari areas without the trip starting to feel rushed.
The longer answer is that it depends on your children’s ages, how much travel they can handle, and whether the safari is the whole vacation or one part of a wider trip. That is where the planning matters.
Why Timing Matters More on a Family Safari

A family safari is not planned in the same way as an adult safari. With children, the trip needs to work around energy levels, drive times, lodge setup and how flexible each day can be. For younger children, comfort, flexibility, ease, short game drives and private vehicles matter just as much as wildlife. Lodge choice also has a major impact on how the trip feels day to day.
The Best Safari Length by Age
Under 6: Usually 5 to 7 Nights on Safari
For families travelling with children under six, I would usually keep the safari portion to around 5 to 7 nights. That is often enough to settle in, enjoy a few really good drives, and keep the trip enjoyable without overextending younger children.

Short game drives, flexible schedules, lodges used to hosting young families, private vehicles and calm, safe surroundings are all very important for this age group. South Africa is often the easiest fit, especially malaria-free areas and private reserves with strong infrastructure, while Botswana can work in more exclusive settings but needs careful camp selection. Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe are generally better once children are older.
This is also the age bracket where rules may have influence your trip. Some safari operators and lodges do not allow children under six on shared drives, and family travel often works best with a private vehicle or a lodge with a strong children’s program.
What tends to work best
- One safari area, not two
- Short transfer days
- A private vehicle where possible
- A lodge with a proper children’s program
- The option to add beach or city time before or after safari
