For many families, “malaria-free” is not a preference so much as a planning line in the sand. It changes the shortlist quickly, particularly when you’re traveling with small kids, multi-generational groups, or anyone who would rather avoid antimalarial medication unless it’s genuinely necessary.
The good news is that you do not have to compromise on the quality of your safari. South Africa, in particular, offers outstanding malaria-free safari regions with excellent guiding, strong family infrastructure and a big choice of high-end lodges and luxury camps.
What a “malaria-free” safari entails

A “malaria-free” safari typically refers to staying in areas where malaria risk is considered very low, rather than traveling into well-known higher-risk zones.
Even in very low-risk areas, we still recommend bite avoidance and sensible precautions, and the decision on antimalarials should always be made with your clinician as part of an individual risk assessment.
Also remember that we know these areas well and have personally spent lots of time in them, so we can build your safari routing and lodge selection around your comfort level, then you can confirm health advice with a travel clinic.
The best malaria-free safari regions for families

1) Madikwe Game Reserve
Best for: Big Five viewing without Kruger’s malaria profile, plus a strong lodge mix for families
Madikwe is one of South Africa’s most compelling malaria-free safari options for families. It’s a “hidden gem” with lesser visitor numbers than Kruger and it’s malaria-free, which makes it particularly appealing for families with younger children. If seeing the Big Five is high on your list, Madikwe should be too, as it is home to the entire Big Five, as well as a thriving population of wild dog.

2) The Waterberg
Best for: Easy logistics from Johannesburg (45 minutes by private air charter), family-friendly variety, private-use options
If you want a malaria-free safari that is straightforward to reach and slow-paced, Waterberg is a strong choice. We recommend it repeatedly to families with small children.
