Few decisions shape a safari honeymoon more than choosing where to spend time in the bush. For many couples, the choice comes down to two of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife regions: Botswana’s Okavango Delta or South Africa’s Greater Kruger area, particularly the Sabi Sands.
At Mahlatini, our Travel Experts guide couples through these decisions regularly. Understanding what distinguishes each region helps shape a honeymoon that reflects how you want to experience safari.
The Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta in northern Botswana is one of Africa’s most distinctive ecosystems. Seasonal floodwaters spread across the Kalahari sands each year, forming a network of channels that attract wildlife from across the surrounding region.
Safari activities often combine traditional game drives with time on the water, which can include anything from mokoro excursions to boat safaris through the Delta’s waterways.
Wildlife viewing here frequently centers on the Delta’s floodplains, particularly during the dry months when animals gather along permanent water.
Among the camps Mahlatini regularly recommends in the Delta are:
- Vumbura Plains: Located in a private concession in the northern Okavango, Vumbura offers both land and water-based activities depending on seasonal water levels. The surrounding floodplains attract a wide variety of birdlife, along with elephant, lechwe and buffalo.
- Mombo Camp: Positioned on Chief’s Island, Mombo sits in one of Botswana’s most wildlife-rich areas. The surrounding grasslands and floodplains support strong predator populations and large concentrations of plains game
- Chitabe Lediba: Situated within a private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve, Chitabe Lediba combines productive game viewing with access to seasonal waterways.
