A water-based safari means that instead of spending every outing in a vehicle, you get to experience Africa from channels, lagoons and riverbanks... by boat, by mokoro, or on a river cruise. Done well, it allows you to slow down and enjoy outstanding wildlife encounters from a different perspective.
What counts as a “water-based safari”?
A water-based safari focuses on wildlife viewing from rivers, lagoons, wetlands, or floodplains, rather than relying solely on game drives. The format varies by region and water levels. In some places, water activities are the main event; in others, they are a valuable addition to a land-based safari. There are also many different kinds of water-based activities, which you can learn more about in our blog, what to expect on a water-based safari: boats, mokoros and river cruises.
Step 1: Choose the style of water experience you want
Most travelers start with where they want to go on a water-based safari—“Okavango” or “Zambezi”, but the better starting point is the experience... what can you picture yourself doing?
If you want classic mokoro safaris
Botswana’s Okavango Delta is the benchmark. Seasonal floods transform the landscape into channels and islands, with wildlife seen from both land and water. In the right season and located at a camp that does mokoro safaris well, you’re bound to have a remarkable vacation. Discover more about a water-based safari in Botswana in our blog, Top Water-Based Safaris in Botswana’s Okavango Delta.
If you want canoeing on a major river
The Lower Zambezi is well known for canoe safaris and relaxed wildlife viewing as wildlife gather along the riverbank. It’s especially enjoyable for active travelers who want to combine a traditional safari with some water-based wildlife viewing.
If you want boat-based viewing with big herds
If you’re a less active traveler, a boat safari along the Chobe Riverfront is ideal. Wildlife viewing is often strongest in the dry season when animals, particularly elephant, concentrate along the river. It’s also a fantastic location for birders.
Step 2: Get the timing right (it matters more than most people expect)
Water-based safaris are shaped by rainfall patterns and water levels. This is particularly true in the Okavango Delta, where floodwaters typically arrive around May and reach their peak in mid-year before receding later in the dry season.
In the Delta, you are not just choosing dates, you are choosing a type of safari, because water levels influence the activities that are possible and the landscapes you will see. If mokoros are a priority, tell your Travel Expert upfront. Some areas can be too shallow at certain points in the season, while others remain viable.
Step 3: Pick camps based on water access
Camps can describe themselves as “water-based” and deliver very different trips. The practical difference is usually one of these:
- Permanent water access versus seasonal channels
- Location within the wetland system (some areas are better for boats, others for game drives)
- How the camp actually runs activities (some include water excursions daily, others offer them only when conditions allow)
Step 4: Decide how to combine water and land safaris
Most people get more from a water-based safari when it is paired with land-based game viewing, either within the same region or as a second stop. We specifically recommend Delta combinations that add areas such as Linyanti or Chobe for contrast.
Step 5: Plan the length of stay around the water
Water-based safaris tend to reward time. As a rule, if water activities are central to your trip, you want enough time for weather and water conditions to vary slightly across days. If water is an add-on, shorter stays can work, particularly when paired with stronger land-based game viewing.
We have been named one of the top 10 World’s Best Tour Operators in Travel + Leisure’s® World’s Best Awards, which is a powerful reminder of the care and craft at the heart of what we do. When it gets to the nitty gritty of planning, we can advise on what feels right once you share your dates and priorities, because seasonality influences how each region performs.
Step 6: Do the practical planning early
Health planning
Many water-based safari regions are malaria-risk areas, so professional advice is important. Mahlatini can help you plan the routing, and inform you regarding health risks and entry requirements.
Step 7: Know what to tell your Travel Expert
If you want a water-based safari that feels right, share what matters most at the start:
- Whether mokoros are a must, or simply a “nice to have”
- Whether you want a high wildlife pace, or a slower day with time in camp
- Any non-negotiables around privacy, food requirements, comfort or family travel
The best vacations come from matching experience type with the ideal season and location, and then designing the itinerary around that.
Start planning your water-based safari
A water-based safari is one of the most rewarding ways to experience Africa, but it is also one of the easiest to get slightly wrong if you plan it like a standard safari. Water levels, camp location and timing shape the experience more than most travelers realize.
If you’re considering a water-based safari, use Mahlatini’s Trip Planner or inquire directly. Share your preferred travel window and the type of water experience you want, and we’ll recommend the right regions and camps, then design an itinerary that flows naturally from start to finish.
