The Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan is a colonial-era hotel that has played host to legendary guests over the years including Agatha Christine, Winston Churchill, and King Farouk of Egypt. Built in 1899 on a pink granite cliff, this iconic hotel stands in the Nubian Desert, on the banks of the Nile facing Elephantine Island. Art Deco meets Mamluk glamor in this chandeliered palace which is close to the rock Tombs of Amarna, the Aswan Museum and Elephantine Island.
Retaining its Victorian character, the interiors of the hotel mix Egyptian and French styles. A recent renovation cut the number of rooms in half and increased the proportion of the suites. Now rooms sit in either the original palace wing or the modern tower wing. In the modern tower, the 62 rooms all have Nile-facing balconies. The rooms all have deep tubs or rain showers and feature plush furnishings in a range of color schemes from rich reds to jewel greens. The hotel’s historic 1902 restaurant, serving French cuisine, was modeled after Cairo's Ibn Tulun mosque and features Moorish, striped arches and a grand Arabian domed ceiling. Other dining options include Mediterranean and Levant cuisine. After a day of sightseeing, partake in high tea overlooking the Nile and then enjoy a cocktail at The Terrace for the ultimate sunset viewing.
