In contrast to the heat and humidity of Kerala’s plains, the mountains of Thekkady are cool and fresh. At Amritara Shalimar Spice Garden you will cross a wooden suspension bridge into 5 acres of cool, landscaped gardens containing palm, spice and mango groves, and thatched cottages and rooms hidden deep in the woods. Apart from being a lovely place to rest, you can also spot elephants and other wildlife in the nearby Periyar Wildlife Reserve.

The resort’s décor is Malayalam in style, with wooden beams, wide verandas and clean white lines. There are 11 elegant rooms, 11 elegant cottages and 2 pool villas. All have thatched elephant-grass roofs, ensuite bathrooms and private verandas overlooking the spice gardens, a perfect spot for birdwatching. Each room has bright splashes of color provided by the soft furnishings. Meals are had in the restaurant, at one of the stone tables in the garden, by the swimming pool or on your own veranda. Relax in the Ayurvedic center, at the large swimming pool or in the breezy poolside lounges. Activities include birdwatching, visits to nearby spice or tea plantations, tours to Periyar Wildlife Reserve, hiking and traditional dance and music performances.
