The Lotus Houseboat is a traditional rice barge upcycled into a charter boat featuring 2 bedrooms and including a captain, cook and housekeeper. On 1 or 2- night cruises, the Lotus plies the languid palm-fringed canals and lagoons of the Ozhinhavalappu Estuary, a half mile or so inland from Neeleshwar. It’s a wonderful way to gain an authentic insight into remote village scenes and observe elusive wildlife up close.
The Lotus is fabricated from wooden planks yoked together with coir and sealed with resin from boiled cashew fruit. It has sleek interiors with a hint of colonial charm and a relaxed house party atmosphere. There’s an indoor living room/dining room with teak flooring and adorned with hand-woven durrie rugs, paintings depicting temple murals, squishy armchairs scattered with silk cushions and panoramic windows that open onto the cooling breeze and the ever-changing 180-degree view. The 2 bedrooms have king-sized beds, palatial bathrooms, silent a/c and private verandas for quiet moments and early morning tea. You will be looked after by a caring and ever-attentive team who will make the houseboat feel like your own floating home. In the evening the sun-deck transforms into the perfect location to sip an aperitif or dine under a twinkling star-filled sky. The chef will spoil you with seafood thali feasts and Mediterranean specials prepared using the freshest fish and plump prawns. You will spend most of your time on the boat but there will be plenty of opportunities to go landside and immerse yourself in some local experiences, culture, cycling and meeting local people.
