Windermere Estate

Perched 1600m above sea level, Windermere Estate, in the Western Ghats, is a nature retreat set among tea plantations and misty blue mountains. Ideal for walkers and nature-lovers, it’s a tranquil base where you can fill your lungs, curl up in hammock with a book and wake up to the sound of birdsong. It is an owner-run property with a farmhouse-cum-chalet feel.

18 lovingly handcrafted rooms are arranged around the original Planter’s Bungalow which serves as the owner’s residence. Inspired by the original bungalow, the rooms are built chalet-style into the side of the mountain with each room exuding the rustic elegance of a farmhouse. The restaurant serves Malayali, oriental and continental meals with plantains, spinach, spices and honey coming from the estate. Sometimes there are BBQs and bonfires with other guests under the estate’s famous boulder. There are daily rambling walks on the planation and out on the tea trail where you can see how local plantations work and visit the fascinating Tea Museum. There are bird walks too and guided mountain hikes. Afterwards, unwind beside the pool and drink in the verdant views.
