An impressive sight of sheer granite cliffs, Mount Mulanje rises 3000m above the surrounding plains below. It's known as the 'Island in the Sky' by locals as when the mist rises, it envelops the mountain, leaving only the peak which seemingly floats high above the ground. With lush forest carpet valleys and waterfalls, it's a picturesque area home to a number of wildlife species.

The Viphya Plateau in Northern Malawi offers a fresh climate, 1,560m above sea level. Although there are large areas of commercial forestry, visitors head to the area for the rolling grassland hills, Rift Valley escarpments descending to Lake Malawi and sections of indigenous rainforest. The birdlife is famously varied and on wilderness walks or on biking trails, you may encounter small mammals like bushbuck, duiker, monkeys, and baboons.
