!Uris Safari Lodge
Between Lake Otjikoto and Etosha National Park and some 20km west of the town of Tsumeb is !Uris Safari Lodge. It is a lodge that is used primarily as a stopover enroute to Kaokoland and the Kunene. Interestingly the word Uris means 'head lice' in the Heikom/Bushmen language and the exclamation mark at the start curiously refers to a small white hill containing metal. The lodge borders several historic German mines and offers an activity for those with an interest in gemstones and minerals.
Originally housing mineworkers in the early 1900's the eight houses are now the lodge's comfortably furnished brick and thatch-chalets. The room names refer to past and current mines. There are 7 semi-detached chalets with queen size beds, mosquito nets, ensuite bathrooms and air-conditioning. Additionally, there are 7 family loft bedrooms with four ¾ beds.
The lodge's main area contains a thatched dining room, lounge and bar which open onto spacious wooden decks. Here delicious meals are served, or for guests who would prefer the 'bush experience', the boma (dining around a fire) is always a favourite. After a long day travelling the lodge's swimming pool provides a welcome relief or the small salon can provide massages.
For those interested in history the lounge has a small-scale library with books on mining as well as mineral artefacts which are displayed in the foyer. Guests can go 'digging' for their wine deep down in the lodge's cellar or end the day with a cigar from the lodge's distinctive collection.
