Holiday to Namibia & South Africa

John Harper, 5th August 2022
Overall Rating:

This was the most amazing trip! Planned with every detail in mind to one of the most diverse countries I’ve ever travelled to! We have made memories to last us a lifetime!

Accommodation Visited

Hotel Heinitzberg

“It was suitable for a one night stay. Staff were friendly and accommodating.”

Kalahari Anib Lodge

“Lovely setting. We had a room with a view of the watering hole. Staff were friendly, the game drive was good getting our first glimpse of wildlife. Additionally, there was the freedom to do your own thing. We hired some fat bikes and did a nature walk one afternoon. The food was really good and the staff were eager to please, singing for us on both nights of our stay.”

Kulala Desert Lodge

“Love, loved, loved this lodge! The staff were amazingly attentive and made a point of speaking to us by name each time, they also remembered which drinks we had. There were wet towels and drinks on arrival back to the lodge after a game drive. Tables set out with views of the dunes at lunch and dinner was perfect as was the food. The real treat was the hot water bottle tucked into your bed at night!”

Swakopmund Hotel

“Whilst this was a nice hotel it lacked the personal touch that the other hotels had. This is probably due to the location and to do with the size of the hotel. The staff weren’t as friendly or approachable. The rooms were cold, in fact, the hotel in general was not warm. It felt very impersonal.”

Mowani Mountain Camp

“Loved it! I don’t think I have enough superlatives! The setting was magnificent, in fact unbelievable that we were in fact among boulders was really unique. Each room seemed to be on its own… you didn’t notice any other guests. An outside bathroom and an inside bathroom, both of exceptional quality. The manager personally greeted us and showed us around. The rooms were amazing… the views from the balcony breathtaking, we even had a hornbill sitting in the tree next to us!
The viewpoint for sundowners was jaw-dropping. The food was amazing, just how do they provide such fine dining in such remote locations! The staff were so attentive.”

Etendeka Mountain Camp

“This is the most remote, uninhabited place I have ever stayed! I’ve got to say when I looked at the tents with the outdoor bucket shower and loo, I did think what on earth! However this stay rated as one of our highlights. The greeting from Dennis and the staff on arrival, when we returned from the drives and upon leaving felt very genuine. The personal involvement of Dennis who was willing to share stories about the camp with all the guests round the table. The attentive staff, the good quality home cooked food on the fire, the homeliness of the camp, and the isolation was a real tonic! Dennis even set up his telescope on the second night to show us Saturn, but the very fact that the sky was full of stars, no light pollution and you could see the Milky Way with the naked eye was literally out of this world! Even the roar of the lions in the distance at night didn’t dampen the experience!”

Andersson's at Ongava

“This lodge was excellent! Our suite was very well equipped with everything you could think you might need, with a balcony overlooking the reserve and a live stream to the tv from the watering hole! Again we were greeted on arrival by the manager and his team with welcome drinks and wet towels each time we returned to the camp. The food was again exceptional as was the service from the staff. The watering hole was frequented on each of our three nights by a black rhino, one night there were three! The camp also has a lookout viewpoint directly onto the watering hole which is ideal for getting quite close to the wildlife without frightening it away. We even tried out the guest infinity pool which was quite a surreal experience….watching the wildlife in their watering hole! We took a game drive on our first night around the Ongava reserve and saw a white rhino and lions with their cubs. The camp is very conveniently placed right on Anderson's gate for Etosha.”

Epako Safari Lodge

“This was a fabulous lodge! The staff were welcoming, friendly and accommodating. The restaurant overlooked the watering hole and the food served was exemplary at breakfast lunch and dinner… fine dining at its best! The room was comfortable with a view out over the reserve. However, the real icing on the cake for me was discovering Oscar the giraffe! A giraffe who knows what time the game drives go out and comes back and waits for treats! I was able to feed him… He even followed us back to our room! I only wish we could have had more time here!”

Rovos Rail

“Excellent experience! From arriving at Cape Town station to the end of our journey at Meyerton station the hospitality was tremendous! The staff were truly engaged in their work and you could feel their passion to get it right for the passenger. Daphne the train manager made a point of speaking to every guest every day. The cabins were cleaned methodically three times a day. The food and drink were exceptional, again given the small area for preparation! The electric blanket at night was a real bonus too!
The trips off the train were of good, most interestingly Kimberley Diamond Mine where the guide was very good in her knowledge and explanations.
The train itself during travel at night felt quite noisy and a little bumpy… however this didn’t spoil the experience. It’s just a shame that we had to disembark at Meyerton instead of Pretoria, however this was circumstances beyond the company’s jurisdiction.”

Staff Review

“Our trip was over nineteen months in the planning and Caroline did an amazing job! From the first enquiry her advice and knowledge was confident and reassuring that we would have the holiday of a lifetime… and we did! If we had any queries they were responded to swiftly and professionally. We were updated constantly, for example when the Blue Train was temporarily suspended, and assisting us in changing the booking to Rovos Rail. There were some very special touches; the welcome letter when we arrived at the first hotel in Namibia, the email to check we were ok and everything was going to plan part way through. Additionally, when we had an issue with the car exhaust, Caroline intervened to make sure everything was fixed. The final personal touch was the email to enquire that we had arrived safely home.”
