vacation to South Africa

Margaret Anne & Paul Matthews, 2nd October 2015
Overall Rating:

Fantastic, a very memorable first holiday to SA

Countries Visited

South Africa

“a wonderful country, very beautiful, with many interesting places to explore”

Accommodation Visited

The Clarendon Fresnaye

“our room was great and the kids' too, although the family suite meant that we (the parents) had to walk through the kids' room to get to the bathroom. A second bathroom/shower room would have been appreciated. The hotel manageress was the most delightful lady - very helpful and friendly. Indeed all the staff were very friendly and the breakfast was delicious.”

Grootbos Garden Lodge

“Idyllic. Even despite the weather we loved this rural retreat and made use of many of the facilites. Staff were very helpful and accommodating, food was delicious and beautifully presented. Loved coming back to a lit fire in our lodge.”

Rosenhof Country House

“Beautiful rooms and public areas. We arrived here after a 3 hours drive and settled in immediately. The atmosphere was quite formal, however our children being older had no problem coping with this. We were aware, however that the hotel seemed to attract an older age group of guests.”

“By far our favourite. The furnishings and proportions of the bedrooms were sumptuous! The children's loft bedroom and "en suite" were lovely and we did appreciate the lit fire in the bedroom to welcome us back after dinner each evening. It was undoubtedly a hotel geared to the "polo set", with stables to accommodate up to 75 horses, however the spacious and relaxed atmosphere meant the we didn't feel excluded. The only negative aspect we felt was that we were never quite sure who ran the show. The "manager" was frequently referred to by the staff, but we never saw him/her. The waiting staff seemed to have no overall manager and did as they wished. leaving to a slightly disorganised service. On several occasions there was no one at the reception and when we made a booking for dinner at the informal restaurant, no one seemed to be aware of it. Having said that, we loved the place and would definitely return!”

Riverdene Family Lodge

“Perhaps it was due to the accommodation that had preceded it, but we did feel riverdene was a step down from the standard of accommodation we had experienced before. It was clean, tidy and spacious, but lacked any style and character. The staff were friendly and helpful, but the food was not outstanding. Riverdene is a family orientated lodge, however, with the ages of our children, it was not the most appropriate. We unfortunately had another group in the lodge with much younger children that took over the dining room and were not disciplined in any way, which meant meals was rather less enjoyable.
The safari experience however, was incredible. Our ranger, JJ, was fantastic. It couldn't have been better in any way. This part was definitely 5/5”

Staff Review

“Nikki was very helpful in organising our accommodation and answering all queries. it was clear she knew the country well and her overall choice of hotels and route were perfect for our trip.”
