Set in Burunge Wildlife Management Area's 20,000 hectares, Chem Chem Lodge lies between the wildlife-rich Tarangire National Park and stunning Lake Manyara. The privately owned lodge is a quiet retreat with excellent levels of service. Tucked away on the western side of the concession, the lodge is small, comprising only 8 tented suites and a main building. Known as “the sunset camp”, Chem Chem is the birthplace of the slow safari as you are encouraged to get out of a vehicle and see, feel, touch, and smell the African bush.
The 8 secluded tent-style suites (including a family suite) are made from canvas, wood and stone and are raised above ground level and accessed via wooden walkways. Each is a sophisticated oasis with an organic palette of color and texture reflecting the natural beauty beyond. Brass fans, vintage writing desks and chests, and linen sheets perfectly compliment the safari chic décor. The bathrooms have both indoor and outdoor showers and free-standing baths to sink into at the end of the day. There’s also a private veranda with two campaign chairs and a chaise long to while away an afternoon in. The exquisite design continues in the main camp area where there’s a bar, library, lounge, dining area and outside boma, where you will dine next to a crackling fire and under a dazzling array of stars. A communal pool is hidden beneath the trees to cool off from the midday sun, and the Chem Chem Spa offers the ultimate in ‘slow safari’ relaxation.
