Pongwe, about halfway up Zanzibar's east coast, has a real gem of a beach - true Indian Ocean style - making Pongwe Beach Hotel an authentic paradise retreat. The bay's clear blue waters, protected by the reef one kilometer from the shore, are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. An unassuming and mellow hotel, it concentrates on simplicity with style.
There are only 22 cottages, lending the hotel a wonderfully intimate air. Zanzibari in structure, with palm-leaf thatched roofs, mosaic floors and handmade wooden furniture, they're set right on the beachfront or 20m back amongst the beautiful green gardens. The 4 suites have their own plunge pool. 2 of these suites have 2 bedrooms, making them perfect for families. Food is one of the highlights at Pongwe. Meals are served in a big palm-thatched building overlooking the beach, and the menu combines the best of fish, seafood, vegetables, and meats that Zanzibar has to offer. Most people are attracted to Pongwe with dreams of sipping cocktails in the infinity pool and unplugging in a hammock. When you are feeling more energetic though, you can swim and snorkel in the ocean straight from the beach, fish or sail from the hotel’s boat or borrow mountain bikes and kayaks.

Holiday to Pongwe Beach Hotel
Great beach, great rooms. There is nothing to do at night so a TV in the room (for DVDs) would have been nice. Also, the food service is REALLY slow. Granted I have nothing to do, but I do not want to spend 2 hours sitting waiting for lunch. Also, we went snorkeling, which was expensive, and not…

Honeymoon to Pongwe Beach Hotel
After a delay on the mainland due to a thunderstorm and an hours drive through the island, we were greated with a cocktail and an outstanding view of the indian ocean. We were given a full explanation of how the hotel worked, meal times, beach and pool drinks service and a warm welcome.
