The weather in Zambia

Situated in Southern Africa, Zambia is a landlocked country of rugged terrain with rivers and wetlands that attracts a diverse range of wildlife. With a subtropical climate, Zambia's weather is defined by a wet and dry season.

The dry season runs from May to October when there is little to no rainfall and humidity is very low. The wet season is from November to April with most rain in December, January, February and March and high humidity. The further north you go, the earlier the rain arrives and the later it leaves.

Zambia - best times to visit...

Here is a general guide for the best times to visit for some of Zambias' popular activities:

  • Victoria Falls: June to September is when the water is mid-to-low and the spray does not obstruct the view of the falls. Although, if you do not mind the spray, visit between March and May when the Zambezi River is in full flood.
  • Horticulture: November to May is the 'green' season.
  • Safari: The best time to view wildlife is during the dry season from May to October when animals gather around rivers and waterholes.
  • Bird watching: November to April is the best time for bird watching when migratory birds are present.
  • Shoulder Season Rates: November to April.
