Holiday to Botswana

Ann and Deryck Braun, 9th November 2014
Overall Rating:

The choice of lodges was perfect. The staff were all superb but the real stars were the guides -- Mocks at Duma Tau and Rain at Little Vumbura. They managed to get us to see things that were almost unheard of -- leopards mating and not just one but two wild dog kills within minutes of each other! We particularly enjoyed a lecture that Mocks gave us on the history and geography of Botswana and a description of how the Delta came about. Also the boat trip with Rain through the waterways of the Delta. I'm generally nervous of elephants but felt so confident with Mocks and Rain as they both had a deep understanding of the elephants' behaviour. The ambience and food at both lodges was five star and of course the flights to the camps were also geat fun. All round, I'd say it was the most amazing game-viewing holiday I can ever remember!

Countries Visited

Botswana

“I had never been to Botswana before, despite living right next door in South Africa, and was so impressed by the way the government are caring for their natural heritage. It is a country that really does seem to have got it right. The Okavango Delta is unique and thank goodness it has just been declared a World Heritage Site. I have never seen such game sightings anywhere before, nor been so close to a leopard. It was a memorable and wonderful holiday -- I'm so glad I was privileged to visit the country and stay at those amazing Wilderness Safaris camps.”

Accommodation Visited

DumaTau Camp

“I could go on forever! Lovely room overlooking the Linyanti Swamps and the occasional thrill of an ellie walking through the camp! Mocks, our guide was unbelievable and we felt so privileged to have him showing us the game. He understood the animals so well and could almost anticipate what they were going to do next. The meals and bar service were five-star and I left feeling that I was leaving behind friends, so warm was the service.”

Little Vumbura Camp

“Little Vumbura was a wonderful contrast to Duma Tau. We loved our room there too and once again the standard of meals and bar service was outstanding. A feature that makes it interesting is that you can only reach the camp by boat as it's on its own island. I particularly loved learning about the Delta system and was surprised when I discovered that the whole place is Kalahari sand, not soil as one would expect. Absolutely fascinating. Our guide Rain, took us on a boat trip through the waterways as well as some fantastic game drives. In my opinion, Wilderness Safaris are the best!!”

Staff Review

“Greg always comes up with something that's exceptional and it's great to know that he can recommend a lot of camps based on personal experience. All the staff at Mahlatini are so helpful and efficient it's a real pleasure dealing with them!”
