Despite its size, Sri Lanka boasts one of the world’s highest rates of unique biodiversity, with over 90 species of mammals, including the majestic leopard, Asian elephant, sloth bear and buffalo. With a total of 22 national parks, covering almost a tenth of the land mass, safari is worth including in any Sri Lankan journey. Iconic Yala, located in the south-east, is the most popular destination for wildlife viewing, with leopards as the star attraction. Udawalawe is just south of the central highlands and is known for Asia’s large concentration of indigenous elephants and its majestic birds of prey.
