The Last House is an intimate 5-bedroomed beach house in Tangalle’s Mawella Bya, one of the south coast’s last remaining underdeveloped beaches. It’s barefoot luxury in a private location within reach of heritage sites, cave temples, game reserves, a bird sanctuary, and a golf course. The chic design was Asia’s famous architect Geoffrey Bawa’s ‘last’ private commission, hence the name. The atmosphere he created is relaxed and convivial, with peaceful grounds and elegant interiors.
The 5 rooms are individually designed, double rooms with ensuite bathrooms and views of the sea where 2 of the rooms are on the first floor of the main house and the other 3 are set in the property’s grounds looking out onto the gardens. The uncluttered rooms feature antique furniture, whitewashed walls, ceiling fans and dashes of color. Meals are served in the open-air dining area overlooking the pool and gardens or you can ask the staff to arrange a barbeque or pitch your table beachside for romantic alfresco dining. At the house is equipment to enjoy a variety of beach games, surfing and boarding, or leisurely croquet on the lawn. For some exploration at sea, a small fishing boat can be made available to take you fishing or snorkeling around the nearby bays and beaches.
