Joe Parkes

Joe's love for travel was solidified with a year-long global adventure before starting university. Since then, he has eagerly seized every opportunity to explore and has visited more than a staggering 70 countries, from Romania to Rwanda, Albania to Australia and Iceland to India. A career in travel seemed almost destined for Joe, and it continues to be a fulfilling and enjoyable journey. The Indian Subcontinent holds a special place in his heart, and his passion is evident with more than 20 visits to this enchanting region.

Since 2005, Joe has nurtured and embraced a specialism in the Indian Subcontinent. After an eye-opening three-month backpacking trip across India, Joe accepted an India Specialist role for a luxury tour operator. Nearly two decades later, he continues to revel in the rewarding journey he embarked upon many moons ago.

Most Memorable Trip

Almost impossible to choose! If I had to toss a coin it would be between my first visit to Bhutan, drinking tea with former head-hunters in Nagaland in north-east India, or cycling in Ladakh. I will also never forget trekking to see mountain gorillas in Rwanda’s magnificent Volcanoes National Park.

Top Of My Bucket-List

Madagascar is at the very top of my list. I'm a passionate wildlife photographer and the uniqueness of the fauna (and flora) fires my imagination like nowhere else.

Favourite Safari Animal

"One I haven't seen yet, a Pangolin. They fascinate me and knowing how lucky I would have to be to see one fuels my interest. In terms of the Indian Subcontinent, it would be the tiger. Immense and beautiful."

Sundowner of Choice

"A fresh lime soda with lots of ice, ideally served with spicy masala papad and chutney. The very best I have had was atop an abandoned fort in Rajasthan watching the sun set over the sheer vastness of India. My top tip is to ask for it sweet and salty."

Favourite Property

"I love the understated luxury of the Ceylon Tea Trails Bungalows in Sri Lanka. Start your day with a steaming cup of tea, looking out over brilliant green tea fields, all to a soundtrack of bird song. Bliss."

Top Travel Tip

Temple socks. When visiting temples throughout the Indian Subcontinent it is necessary to remove one’s footwear. The floor can be very hot so my top tip is to carry a pair or two of dedicated ‘temple socks’ for these occasions.

The Best Part Of My Job

Being immersed in the world of travel all day, every day. I genuinely love sharing my passion with others and learning from fellow travelers I meet on my journeys.
