Amakhala Game Reserve – Leeuwenbosh Lodge, South Africa

Adam Chapman

Leeuwenbosch Lodge is a wonderfully quaint and relaxed lodge suitable for families and other visitors looking for a sociable experience. The grounds are lovely and the decor of the rooms is in keeping with the colonial farmhouse that it is. The family are welcoming and great fun.

The Amakhala Game Reserve began in 1999 as a joint conservation venture. Today, six independently owned lodges of The Heritage Collection, are all TGCSA Star Lodge accredited. The lodges are owner managed by the descendants of the original families who arrived here with the British settlers of 1820. The lodges offer various styles of accommodation, which include two gracious colonial homesteads, two classic bush lodges, an historic inn and a Settler farmhouse.

Leeuswenbosh Lodge consists of the Country House and the Shearer’s Lodge, both of which are 4 star in standard. The Country House is a historical colonial manor house built in 1908 set amid beautiful indigenous gardens and is an ideal base for game viewing and relaxation. The Shearer’s Lodge, the old shearing shed, in which close on a million merino sheep were shorn, has been beautifully converted into four luxury en-suite rooms, three twins and one really special honeymoon suite and surrounded by indigenous gardens.

Holiday to South Africa during February 2011

South Africa Review

We have been to South Africa before in February/March when it is the depths of winter in the UK. Envigorating to get away from our dismal weather and the South Africans we have met have always made us welcome. Where we have been, we have alway felt safe although we have clearly avoided the townships...
