Set in the pristine waters of Lake Malawi and measuring just 1km in diameter, Mumbo Island is an untouched tropical paradise within an exclusive concession area and boasts some of the best fresh water diving in the world.
Mumbo's eco-policies are very strong, with solar power and eco-architecture integral parts of the camp creating a rustic 'Robinson Crusoe' feel. The six Meru-style tented 'chalets' are set high atop rocks, offering fantastic panoramic views across the lake from the large viewing deck, and are connected to the private beach via elevated wooden walkways. All chalets offer private shaded decks, hammocks, hot bucket showers and 'eco-loos'. For those wishing to explore, Mumbo Island Camp offers an excellent range of activities - snorkel in fish filled bays, kayak around the island, learn to scuba dive, hike the surrounding nature trails, enjoy a sunset boat cruise, or just enjoy some peace and quiet in your private hammock. If you prefer not to self-cater, chef hire is available (at an additional cost).
A 3-4 hour drive from Lilongwe and a 1 hour boat transfer from Cape Maclear.
Kayaking, diving, snorkelling, birding and nature trails.
