“We loved the country and were sorry we only had a fortnight to explore it. There is so much to see and do it is hard to know what to leave out. It was easy to drive around and there was never a time that we didn't feel safe.”

“Whilst not in the centre of town this was still quite a noisy hotel. We had traffic noise until late at night which could easily have been stopped by some double glazing. The room was spacious and had everything we needed but it was in need of a bit of TLC, a coat of paint in the bathroom where it was going mouldy wouldn't have gone amiss. That said, it was the staff who really made this hotel a good place to stay, friendly and really helpful and informative. The breakfasts were excellent.”

“Excellent location and room. The food was very good and the dining facilities were very nice. Some of the dining staff were a little too keen, taking your plates away as you were finishing your last mouthful but they were very helpful when we arrived one night as dinner was finishing as we had been delayed getting back from Lesotho; we were given dinner and weren't made to feel awkward. The young lady on reception was a bit lack lustre but another member of staff was very helpful when we asked about driving over to Lesotho. The bar and games facilities were good and there was plenty of outside space where you could sit and admire the fantastic view. The room was spacious and the house keeping staff were excellent. Some maps of the walks would have been handy for those people who wanted to go on their own.”

“We loved this place. The room was fantastic, the staff excellent, the food was some of the best we had in SA. The battlefield tours were first class with very knowledgeable guides, who left us feeling quite emotional. Nicky is continuing the fantastic work with the local children and ensuring that the voice of the Zulu people is heard. Would recommend it to anyone. In retrospect we would have liked one day less at the Cavern and another here as it would have felt a little less rushed and it was such a lovely place that we would have been happy just to spend some time relaxing and reading some of their books. Being able to walk in their reserve, just yards from the giraffe was a bonus.”

“Where to start? Brilliant accommodation, a whole house rather than just a room, and where else could you sit on your own veranda and watch hippos grazing beneath in the garden? Great location, lovely friendly staff, great food ( best breakfasts we had in SA,} great guide and tracker who worked really hard to find everything that the guests wanted to see, fantastic game viewing. We loved the sundowners and the early morning coffee with Amarula. If I ever win the lottery jackpot I will make them an offer for the place. We would definitely return.”

The Oyster Box Hotel

“This is a difficult one. If you like large chain hotels then you probably couldn't have faulted the facilities or the service. Unfortunately this just wasn't for us. Having the staff dressed as they were (in various colonial style costumes) seemed quite incongruous and cheesy. The room was on the small side once you had the two of us and our luggage in there. You couldn't watch the TV as it was obscured by the bed post. The food was good and the view from out balcony was lovely. I think next time we would look for a smaller, more personal hotel in Durban, if such a thing exists. Perhaps we had been spoilt by having stayed in the smaller more personal lodges.”
