Amakhala Woodbury Lodge

The Amakhala Game Reserve is an 18 000 acre private game park located in the malaria free Eastern Cape of South Africa. It offers accommodation in a selection of 11 establishments made up of country houses, safari lodges and tented camps some of which are owner managed by the descendants of the original families who arrived here with the British settlers of 1820. The reserve is a Big 5 Reserve and hosts other animals such as cheetah, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and plenty of antelope species.

Found in Amakhala, Woodbury Lodge is a property spectacularly set against a cliff, above the Bushmans River Valley and offering breath taking views of the reserve. There are 6 comfortably appointed stone and thatch sleeping lodges, each with airβ??conditioning and enβ??suite bathroom, including 2 family suites. All rooms have private decks and large bathrooms with a view over the plains. Facilities include a communal swimming pool, indoor and outdoor dining area,viewing deck and boma area.

The central camp area charms with its thatched entertainment area and provides guests with a thrilling slice of history; the camp offers views across the valley to a historical site of great importance, as the first place a dinosaur fossil was discovered in South Africa.

Getting There

Approximately 1 hour drive from Port Elizabeth and approximately a 3.5 hour drive from the Garden Route.


Morning and afternoon game drives and upon request: a river cruise along the Bushman's River, Addo Elephant Back Safaris (50 min drive away) and the Gary Player signature golf course (40 min drive away).

We weren't given any information as to what time we should arrive at Amakhala so we took our time to get there - when we arrived, were told our first game drive was in 20minutes so we had to quickly eat some leftover lunch they kindly offered us and change for this. Had we gotten there 20minutes late, we would have missed out on this drive that we were entitled…

Our driver was very knowledgable and informative about the animals and the game reserve generally which enhanced our first safari experience. We enjoyed all aspects of our stay in Woodbury Lodge finding it very relaxing and peaceful.
