Marataba Safari Lodge

Marataba Safari Lodge is a small tented camp in Limpopo. A far cry from traditional camping, the 15 tents possess slick contemporary design that melds with the surrounding wilderness thanks to an excellent choice of colours, a canvas roof and part stone-part canvas walls. From their private balconies guests can gaze across at the Waterberg Mountains, rising nearby, and take in the splendour of the 23,000 hectare private concession in which the lodge is situated. The concession is malaria free and is part of the Marakele National Park, home to a wide variety of wildlife, with regular sightings of elephant, lion and the endangered Cape vulture.

All of the tents at Marataba feature a number of special touches and modern amenities, from complimentaryin-room sherry to international adaptors. All rooms include viewing decks, outdoor and indoor showers and a romantic stand-alone bath. The main guest area is akin in decor to the rooms, presenting a similar marriage of safari chic with modernistic panache. The lounge is the perfect place to relax; the fireplace most welcome in the cooler winter months. Guests can also expect a swimming pool, WiFi access and a quaint bar.

Activities in the area consist of game drives and exciting ventures into the wilderness on foot. Guiding is excellent with the rangers at Marataba incredibly knowledgeable. On guided walks guests follow paths woven into the landscape by animals; it is the ideal way to feel at one with the impressive surrounds.

The game reserve itself has a huge variety of game and the fact that there are only ever 6 vehicles on a drive at one time really does make it feel exclusive, animal-friendly and generally makes the safari a much better experience. The rooms were great. Diner was ok, although not too structured at times.
