Marataba Safari Lodge is a small tented camp in Limpopo. A far cry from traditional camping, the 15 tents possess slick contemporary design that melds with the surrounding wilderness thanks to an excellent choice of colours, a canvas roof and part stone-part canvas walls. From their private balconies guests can gaze across at the Waterberg Mountains, rising nearby, and take in the splendour of the 23,000 hectare private concession in which the lodge is situated. The concession is malaria free and is part of the Marakele National Park, home to a wide variety of wildlife, with regular sightings of elephant, lion and the endangered Cape vulture.
All of the tents at Marataba feature a number of special touches and modern amenities, from complimentaryin-room sherry to international adaptors. All rooms include viewing decks, outdoor and indoor showers and a romantic stand-alone bath. The main guest area is akin in decor to the rooms, presenting a similar marriage of safari chic with modernistic panache. The lounge is the perfect place to relax; the fireplace most welcome in the cooler winter months. Guests can also expect a swimming pool, WiFi access and a quaint bar.
Activities in the area consist of game drives and exciting ventures into the wilderness on foot. Guiding is excellent with the rangers at Marataba incredibly knowledgeable. On guided walks guests follow paths woven into the landscape by animals; it is the ideal way to feel at one with the impressive surrounds.

Game viewing- Being a small private reserve the Game viewing was authentic and we saw lions, leopard, herds of elephant and giraffe as well as many memorable species of birds. We were particularly impressed by our guide, Mr Jomi Krobb who was extremely knowledgeable about the Reserve and wildlife. He is a great advocate not just for Marataba but also for wildlife preservation. We undertook eight Game drives and a walking safari and loved every minute. Accommodation- This was our first tented lodge and as such we felt much closer to the wildlife. The tents are extremely luxurious with both indoor and outdoor showers which was a unique experience. We stayed in one of the luxury tents which are more peaceful and secluded and we still felt very safe. My wife indulged in several of the spa treatments and she felt they were to a very high standard. Cuisine- Could not have been better. Being a fairly fussy diner I was not at all disappointed. Although there are only 3 or 4 choices for each meal course (which is to be expected in the bush) the lodge catered for all of our group very well. The wines again are limited as to be expected but infact were very nice indeed. Only one tiny gripe- the literature explained it would take 2-3 hours to reach Marataba from Johannesburg airport but I think this should be altered as both the outward and return journeys both took 3.5 hours and this was without any stops.Read full trip review

Absolutely fantastic setting with wonderful accommodation and facilities. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the guides were knowledgable and friendly - they spotted animals that we would never know existed. We were taken on 2 game drives / day plus a river safari and a bush walk. We saw a great variety of animals including leopards, lions, giraffe, elephants, zebra, tortoise, hyena, rhinos , hippos, aardwolf, bush pigs, Impala, kudu, mongooses , lovely bird life etc etc. Katie and Chris were treated to a romantic meal and their room was decked out with rose petals and champagne. They even treated us to another private meal for the 4 of us. We were made to feel very special indeed. It was an experience we will never forget.Read full trip review
