A bustling hub of South African commerce, Johannesburg is set only 50km away from its twin city Pretoria in the almost entirely urban province of Gauteng. The city is alive with character and there's plenty to explore with a vast array of shops, restaurants and luxury hotels to ease visitors into inner-city life.
Affectionately referred to as Jo'burg, this sprawling metropolis is mostly used as a stop-over destination before moving on to another destination, as such its distinctive charisma and culture is too often overlooked.
The city's Apartheid Museum is an important point of interest if you wish to learn more about South Africa's struggle with equality while the Soweto Township is an intrinsic part of staying in the city. Here you can glimpse Jo'burg's contrasting stratums of wealth with special tours and see the only street on earth here two Nobel Peace Prize winners lived. With holidays to Johannesburg there are plenty of other attractions besides: the Cradle of Humankind offers insight into humanity's past while the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens provides a unique break from city life.
