This fascinating region in the north-central plains of Sri Lanka was previously known as Rajarta, ‘Land of Kings’, and encompasses the relics of the ancient cities of the Sinhalese Kingdom. These timeless treasures include sacred temples, palaces, rock carvings, gardens and monasteries. The most famous site is the extraordinary UNESCO-protected Sigiriya rock fortress dating back to the fifth century.
