Kumu Beach is a contemporary boutique hotel set on a sandy beach in Balapitiya, a sleepy west coast fishing hamlet, 30 minutes south of Bentota and an hour north of Galle. A stay here is blissfully relaxing, you can lounge by the infinity pool or on one of the hammocks beneath the palms, all whilst sampling an exotic smoothie or iced Ceylon tea. With super food and stylish, 10 ocean-gazing rooms, it’s a fabulous place to recoup after an island-wide itinerary, though you could easily stay for longer, given the variety of things to do nearby.
The 10 rooms are elegant and all look out over the pool and garden and have spectacular views across the Indian Ocean. The twin-bedded Kumu Bedrooms are on the first floor while the 4 Oceanview Bedrooms and 4 Oceanview Suites are located on the ground and upper floor, and each directly accesses garden terraces or upper-floor balconies with sweeping sea views. The dining on offer complements the hotel’s coastal setting, with its fresh, creative fusion cuisine. You will dine either in a sea-facing pavilion, the long poolside dining deck or in the air-conditioned café. There isn’t a huge amount to do within the immediate vicinity, the hotel really is more for relaxing, however, Bentota is 30 minutes away for water sports, or there’s the opportunity to visit a turtle hatchery or Ambalangoda’s mask museum. Also recommended is a boat trip through the Madu Ganga wetlands, past crocodiles, tiny islands and mangrove forests.
