The highest freestanding mountain in the world and the tallest massif in Africa, on Tanzania safari trips to Mount Kilimanjaro you can marvel at the towering mountain, rising into the clouds at an altitude of 5,895m. Of Africa's many spectacular vistas, Kilimanjaro's snow-capped peak jostles for a place as one of the best, if not the most iconic, on offer.
Not far from the Kenyan border, the mountain is perhaps best viewed just across the boundary in Kenya's Amboseli National Park. However, to fully appreciate this ancient volcano climbing 'Kili', as it is affectionately known, is the only option.
The mountain falls within the aptly named Kilimanjaro National Park, established in 1977. While the mountain is the obvious reason to visit, the national park and lower slopes hold wonders of their own. Rising in altitude, farmland gives way to a verdant rainforest which is home to a wide variety of species, including leopard, buffalo, monkeys and even elephant. The rainforest falls away into alpine meadows before culminating in the lunarscape leading to the summits. For a truly unique honeymoon in Tanzania, a trip to Mount Kilimanjaro is an absolute must.
There are a number of different routes to reach the mountain's uppermost point: Uhuru Peak, varying in difficulty and some busier than others. You can climb the mountain all year round, however the rains are to be avoided, descending around April - May and November - mid-December. The best time to make your climb is January - February or October time, when the mountain is quieter and the weather is usually calm.
